Frequently used descriptions
The most frequent terms include familiar work such as replacing windows and doors or adding a pool. They describe recurring tasks rather than a single type or size of project.
Frequency depends on the wording of applications, the work being filed and the jurisdictions represented in the dataset.
- "window replacement" matching permits
- 207,112
- "door replacement" matching permits
- 126,213
- "swimming pool" matching permits
- 106,295
- "screen enclosure" matching permits
- 89,818
Counts are not additive: a permit can match more than one term. Adding category counts can count the same permit more than once.
Repeated work generates repeated filings
An existing building may have several permits over its life for roofing, openings and building systems. These filings can outnumber records for complete new buildings.
A less frequent term can still describe a substantial project. Record count does not measure the amount of design or construction involved.
- "new construction" matching permits
- 53,358
- "alteration" matching permits
- 9,529
Counts are not additive: a permit can match more than one term. Adding category counts can count the same permit more than once.
Reading a term page
A term page shows matching records, filing dates, jurisdiction coverage and declared job values where available.
Use those figures to understand the dataset. The requirements of your own project come from its scope, property and applicable rules.
